GLOBALISATION AND CITY-REGIONS

The concept of global city region is more directly rooted in the resurgence of interest in regions and regionalism than it is in the study of globalization or urban and metropolitan restructuring. Stated somewhat differently, the regional dimension of globalization and urbanization processes is what matters most significantly to the meaning of the term. It is the regional that absorbs and defines the interplay of globalization, urbanization, industrialization, and development, and grounds the concept of global city region in a particular form of analysis and interpretation. Over the past thirty years, there has not only emerged a pronounced cross-disciplinary turn toward critical spatial thinking and analysis but also a closely related development of specifically regional perspectives. This New Regionalism, as it has come to be called, has been playing a particularly important role in making theoretical and practical sense of globalization, economic restructuring, technological change, and other processes shaping contemporary life. Underpinning the New Regionalism is a significant re-theorization of the key concepts of region and regionalism.

Cities have been globalizing for many centuries. London and Amsterdam, for example, were global cities in the 16th century and still earlier cases of urban globalization can be found in commercial, imperial, and religious cities around the world. The link between globalization and urbanization processes is therefore not new, but there has been a growing realization that starting at least as early as the 1960s there has been a pronounced acceleration in the globalization of capital, labor, and culture and that this intensified globalization has been having significant effects on cities and urban life all over the world. Analyzing the impact of globalization on cities is thus the first step in understanding the concept of global city regions.

The effects of globalization on cities and urban development can be seen at two levels. Within cities and metropolitan regions, globalization has been playing a role in reconfiguring the social and spatial organization of the modern metropolis and in changing some of the basic conditions of contemporary urban life. Increasing global flows of labor and capital and the concentration of these flows in certain urban areas have contributed to the expansion of metropolitan populations to hitherto unheard of sizes, with several urbanized regions (or city regions) in East Asia now containing more than fifty million inhabitants. Beyond contributing to this expansion in population size, globalization has also fostered the creation of the most culturally and economically heterogeneous cities the world has ever known.

Assalammualaikum,

Salam study salam PhD

Just wanna let u know that i've read your blog n the most interestting words/phrase in the blog that really captured my eyes is 'the new route to knowledge'. why it seem interesting? because until now i'm still wandering around to search for my contribution to the knowledge in my PhD research. FYI i'm a student in public admin at USM. currently doing my research in local government reform & the management of it. after i read about your background in the blog i decided to contact you since you're in local government dept. i believe that u cant contribute to my study some way or another.

anyway we are in the same boat. i'll try to look around for the book that you've mentioned in your blog with a hope that it will boost my confident n skill in finishing my PhD on time.

hope to hear from u. wassalam.

Thank you, we can share and exchange our knowledge on local government. I would like to suggest u

- to create your research blog. May be after 5 or 6 month you will see the response.

- in your blog keep writing anything (the best every day) in your mind about your book your read, the seminar you attended, people you met, what you discussed with your supervisor....its mean you practice writing for your research paper...in Phd writing with your heart and soul...honest what you think...this will teach you not to copy other person material.

- always read high impact journals...very important. Try understand what the author try to prove to us...what actually inside his/her mind

- You must read a lot terutamanya related in your field (its ok if you think you read to much or to wide of your research)...later u will find your RESEARCH QUESTIONS (RQ).... your will discover 5W 1H, the impact, cause ect then find the answers.... then your scope might be reduce...

- next try to formulate your RQ model ( with arrow, bubble, square etc...try play with colours....its going to be fun)

- then start your table of content..... baru boleh mula your research proposal.. .ALL THE ABOVE WILL TAKE 1 YEAR... AND WILL LOVE YOUR RESEARCH SO DEEPLY... you pasti akan pertahan kajian u mati-matian...walaupun orang akan kata macam2. Believe me.

- After 1 year kemudian start buat literature review.....SO BEGITULAH SETERUSNYA...dont stop writing....keep doing walaupun salah dan dihentam oleh supervisor...just be positive and always think she or he always right...we as astudent always wrong...dalam hati selalu kata "kenapa aku tak tak nampak, tak jumpa, tak faham dah lain-lain" ini akan mendorong u terus mencari dan mencari...mengali dan terus mengali ilmu baru.....PHDkan...

ok...lupa...sebaik-baiknya spend your weekday in Library 8-9 hours.... stay in library for reading, writing and searching...mula memang boring.tapi nanti you will miss LIBRARY if 1 hari u tak masuk Library.BUT PLEASE DONT IGNORE YOUR FAMILY..they still need you and love u.

Dah 1 1/2 years I kat UKM I buat cara ini... insyallah..lama-lama jadi fun....always share knowledge jangan kedekut...pasti ilmu u akan bertambah....berganda2...selalu berdoa kepada ALLAH s.a.w semoga usaha kita diberkati

BYE FOR NOW...SEE YOU GOOD LUCK...
